Carter's Story

Carter Guillen, now 10, was born in January 2015 to Juan and Pam Guillen. He was diagnosed in-utero with Dandy-Walker Syndrome, a congenital brain malformation.  At birth, it was discoverd that Carter also had two other congenital genetic disorders, a coartation of the aorta, requiring open heart surgery at 6 weeks old, and a TE Fistula that required two surgeries, the first within 24 hours of birth. Carter was in the NICU for 3 months at birth, enduring multiple surgeries and medical interventions to keep him stable so he could become healthy enough and ready to be cared for at home. After being discharged home, Carter relied on a feeding tube for 2 years to receive his nutrients. Carter's multiple diagnoses have and continue to require various specialist visits, hospital stays, therapy services, home medical equipment, and more. As a child with special needs, Carter will always rely on others for his day-to-day care. Not only does Carter have a seizure disorder, but he uses a rolling walker for mobile assistance and is predominantly nonverbal.

The Project

Juan and Pam are acutely aware of the financial difficulties involved in raising a child with special needs. As you can imagine, expenses like out-of-pocket insurance costs and medical equipment have created a significant financial strain on the Guillens, which is likely to persist. They require a home that accommodates Carter at every stage of his life, one that is ADA compliant to address both his daily needs and any unforeseen challenges in the future. When their plans to build a home became unattainable, a seed was planted by God, leading to the establishment of A Shared Purpose.

Current Needs

The foundation has made significant progress in raising funds for The Guillen Project, but there is still much work be done. While we have secured funds for an incredible lot and received some donated labor, creating a permanent home for Carter that complies with ADA standards requires a considerable financial investment. We need ongoing support to fulfill our mission of building a safe lasting home for Carter and to establish a foundation that enhances the quality of life for those in need in our communities. Please consider contributing to our current campaign, The Guillen Project. Your donation will help provide a home that meets all of Carter's needs and is close to his loved ones and the medical facilities he visits.
